How I stopped hair loss (2005-08-14)
This is not an actual review, because I haven't read the book. I just wanted to share a hair loss recipe with you good people - the one that helped me.

I am a woman, 32 years old. I have had my hair falling out at above average rate since puberty. For a woman, a number of hairs falling out shouldn't be more than 70 per day. I would say that for me it was probably around 200. I was used to seeing bunches of hairs in the sink after washing it, on the pillow, on clothes. Then, few months ago, few factors (hairdresser made a horrible mistake, I made serious changes in my diet and was under a lot of stress) added up and for the next three months I was losing hair at the rate 500 (very roughly - I didn't actually count, but every time I ran fingers through my hair, I would have hairs in my hand). I thought I would end up bald. Then, I found a recipe on the Internet (bless it), and after using it every day, I can testify that it really works! Within the first month, the hair loss returned to normal (what was normal for me - maybe 200 hairs a day), and within the second month, my hair loss became less than average - I would say less than 50 hairs a day! The sink is almost empty after washing hair. I actually solved the problem I have been having my whole adult life.

The recipe:
1 1/2 cup of nettle
1/2 cup chopped onion
Put in a container, add enough alcohol to cover. After a few days (or more), strain and use liquid to massage scalp once a day.

Easy to understand (2004-03-29)
I have read a few books on hair loss and I must say that this one was the easiest to read by far. It uses basic medical terms and is clearly written for someone who is new to hair loss and wanting to find a solution. If you are looking for facts is an easy-to-read format, then this book is for you.

content good, packaging poor (2007-05-07)
The product is useful, content decent, room for notes. My only gripe is that the box which holds the cards doesnt have a cover, so the cards can spill out of the box. Easily fixed with a rubber band, but annoying after you spend this much for a set of flashcards.

Useful but user needs to update (2004-08-04)
For those of us (such as myself) who use a lot of flashcards to study, these are quite useful for the dermatology board examination. They are not totally complete, but provide a nice template since you jot gene defects, board worthy random facts, etc. right onto the card. No pictures or diagrams, which would have been nice. Overall quite useful in studying for the boards, not sure why else you would buy them.

The commonest situation for the occurrence of the dark discoloration is on the lower eyelids. The whole of the face, or any part of it, may be affected, as also any portion of the body and hands. In men the scrotum has been observed to be affected. The majority of persons affected with chromidrosis have been women, usually neurotic, and often the subjects of hysteria. The disease appears in some cases in connection with some nervous shock. It is occasionally feigned. (See feigned Eruptions of the Skin.) These remarks refer to the dark varieties of chromidrosis. This book contains very useful information for caring for skin of color. I found that a lot of the things I was doing to help clear my skin or contain certain issues, may very well have been making the issues worse. Seeing the depth Dr. Taylor goes into to learn about her clients skin makes me understand what a good dermatologist SHOULD be asking me about my skin. I learned a lot from this book on caring about my skin that I was able to bring to follow up appointments with my own dermatologist. She has a lot of DOs and DON'Ts for skin care that make a lot of sense. A must read for all women of color!! It not only addresses skin care issues, but how to maintain your skin.

But then again, I doubt many MDs, Ph.D.s, or RNs would be in need of a reference manual of this caliber. Yet for the untrained it has a wealth of information, which although available in numerous other places and forms is neatly packaged and presented with insight and a definite humorous panache. The only problem I find with it is that it could turn a person into a hypochondriac or turn a hypochondriac into a super-hypochondriac. Yet I would score the book highly for ease of readability and information for the average reader of health fare, which is exactly for whom this book was intended. If you want more in-depth information you can always buy a copy of the Merck Manual and a good medical dictionary to help identify the medical phraseology in it. You won't need either to enjoy this book.

As it says, it is a really an atlas rather than a textbook. As an atlas so I think it is good but the clinical synopsis is not well written. One cannot really learn from the discussion given in the text. The etiology of each disease in not discussed and if it is then it is not clear and is not well explained. It is relatively inexpensive so this is also an advantage but other than this there is no advantage over other books with respect to to the explanation in the text.

Wonderfull book, it has a summary table for each entity very useful for fast look, a lot of color images of great cuality and a text concise, precise and exact.

A comprehensive dermatopathology reference; easy to read. (1998-10-20)
It took quite some time for me to choose a dermatopatholgy reference. Most of my fellow pathology residents have been using Lever's book, mainly because that's what we have available. I decided to go out on a limb and try this brand new book. I'm quite glad I did. This book is a pleasure to use. It is well written and beautifully illustrated. My only criticism is that the index and table of contents could be more helpful. By the way, my colleagues are also glad I purchased this book. I hardly get to see it anymore!

Full explanation I can understand (2010-01-02)
I was told by several Dr.s that I have "mixed connective tissue disease" because I have a high ANA count. Each time - with a different Dr.- I asked what this means and they would say "it's your immune system fighting against itself; that's why you have MS, Lupus, Raynauds, Sjogrens, Osteoarthritis, Dupetryns, etc,etc,etc. That is as far as the explanations went. One day I was in the library and picked up this book. It totally explained all of these and how and why they are caused by immune cells fighting against each other - i.e. AutoImmune Disease. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has been diagnosed with any of the above problems. You'll understand what and why you have something.I immediately ordered it from Amazon.

Autoimmune sufferes must read! (2009-09-12)
My 26 year old sister-in-law recently had a stroke. She suffers from a first misdiagnosed, which is now an undiagnosed autoimmune disease. It is too bad her doctors didn't read this book. She was sent home by a hospital, general doc. & a neurologist after suffering 2 of the soon to be 5 infarctions. They said it was probably a sinus infection and a migrane. Please be aware of THICK BLOOD (blood clots) Autoimmune disease sufferers. You must be your own doctor with such a mysterious disease. I wish I knew more...the doctors knew more...before the bloodclot/stroke. This book opens your eyes to a lot of typical, but not too common things for women and autoimmune disease. A must read!

One of the Best! (2009-08-31)
I have purchased several books like this recently as I am being worked up for an autoimmune disorder myself. I like this one best of all. I found the information very useful and easy to understand and the book is easy to read through and stay with. its not dry like so many textbooks can be. I just wish Dr.Lahita was local for me as I'd love to go to him as a patient. I've considered flying across country to see him but my family thinks I'm nuts.
I recommend this book to anyone trying to get a grasp on autoimmune disorders.

Interesting overview (2006-02-07)
I find the book to be very reader friendly (very nice, useable set up) and some of the information can be useful. Overall I don't think this book acts as a good reference, though it's an interesting read. I found the section on multiple sclerosis to be inconsistent with information given by reputable multiple sclerosis resources (such as the National Multiple Sclerosis Society) - for example: saying there are three types of MS: remitting, progressive and benign. There are actually four types: relapsing-remitting, primary-progressive, secondary-progressive and primary-remitting (people with what he calls benign account for an extremely small percentage of MS patients). His overview of diagnosis seems a little too general as well (his case studies aren't the best examples either. Forgetting information for a test is not unusual and memory loss, like forgetting where you put your keys, is not an exaggerated senior moment, I'm sure that most people have had that happen a few times). I don't know whether his views on the disease, diagnosis and treatments are outdated or just different, but I would not recommend this as a resource - at least not for MS (maybe it's better for some of the others), even if you are just family and friends wanting to get an idea. I think there are many other books that would give a clearer more detailed view of the disease. It is an interesting read though and it's nice to see a book geared toward women and autoimmune diseases. I think he's on to something there, but I think he has more general knowledge than specific with some of the disorders.

"Forget-the-hype" approach to hair care (2010-02-14)
Although I have never been a fan of paying too much attention to the state of my hair, after years of applying permanent color in it, I have seen it grown weaker and thinner. Now I am up to the point where I think my goldilocks need to be chopped off if anything good is ever going to keep coming out of them. Enter AndrÃ© Walker, Oprah Winfrey's personal coiffeur, who openly states: "We always want what we don't have. I'd like to see women really appreciate what they do have and make it work for them" (page 26). If there ever was a no-nonsense approach to dealing with one's hair, this man certainly abets it!

I have to admit, I was always sort of "scared" - really! - from having to worry about my hair. The problem was, I just did not understand how to handle it. In the book's introduction, Oprah herself writes a candid essay about two hair disasters that made her have to shave off her precious mane. After that, she grew distrustful of hairstylists, until AndrÃ© Walker sent her some roses and asked her for the chance to style her hair. It happened twice. After AndrÃ©, Oprah never let anyone else touch her hair.

Although brief in some respects, this book is easy reading and will allow you to first come to terms with your hair, demystifying all the "hype" about the zillions of hair products available nowadays in the market, then teach you how to maintain it healthy. You will learn to identify which hair type you have and pick the necessary - and adequate - products to maintain it in top shape. In subsequent chapters, one learns about different - and fun - alternatives when in mood for a change of look and, last but not least, the essential guide as to how to pick the perfect hairstylist - even how to break up with him / her (yes, AndrÃ© is also a psychologist). But jokes aside I did enjoy the book a great deal and I am now on the lookout for the ideal hairstylist - my first - that will help me change my look and take wise care of my hair.

This book helped me. (2008-10-14)
After going to the beautician for years, I was faced with doing my own hair while in college. Needless to say, I failed terribly and my hair suffered. I read this book back in 2001 and it really helped. All I knew about caring for my hair I learned from my beautician but when I applied the things I learned in the book, my hair really turned around.

For instance, Andre suggests washing your hair at least once a week if you're African-American but I always went to get my hair done every other week. When I started to do wash weekly, I noticed that I had a lot of bounce and the difference I saw was amazing. I don't layer my hair with a ton of grease or styling products. Even when I have braids, I make sure I continue as if it was my own natural hair, I'd wash the braids weekly and condition.

I have people ask where do I get my hair done but I haven't been to a beauty shop in 4 years. I know a lot of his info is common sense, but when I was in school I didn't know where to turn. The book was helpful to me and I think anyone could benefit from his tips.

Very helpful! (2006-04-20)
A lot of common sense and not so common sense. I found the book very helpful for dealing with my type 2c hair. I've followed Andre's advice since reading the book and I've never been more content (I now have my hair under control when it used to tend to frizz with the slightest moisture...and I don't use frizz control products now). Your experience with the book may depend on your specific hair type, but for my moody hair, this contained a lot of the answers I needed.

No new information (2003-05-23)
Although heavily promoted, Andre's book did not provide any new information on how to care for hair. What I particularly disliked was the negativity involved in his presentation of the type 4 hair type. He just added another myth to the list by saying our only two options are to either crop our hair short or relax it. I don't recommend this book.

My mom suffers from female hair loss and is quite embarrassed by it. The problem is; she doesn't like to take pills or use harsh chemicals. So she was delighted to read James' book and discover lots of good exercises along with a nice list of vitamins and foods that stimulate hair growth.

This is the best book for dermatology residents (2004-05-04)
I have read this book almost 85 % , its very nice and informative book if you consider clinical dermatology as your aim in daily practice. I highly recommend students, GPs and dermatologists to purchase this book. The reputation of the authors as a well known pioneers in dermatology for the past several decades, has highly encourged me to buy this book.

For me , its the best of bests for clinical dermatology practice and deserve all the efforts spent on it.

Excellent (2003-07-20)
I have had the oppurtunity to purchase the book as a budding resident in dermatology. To my astonishment, I learnt that the book has enabled me to develop sound academic and clinical skills.
The presentation is remarkable with the text being very lavish in composition and a pleasure to read. The author has given very vivid and lucid descriptions of the entities, portraying personal opinion and trends across the continents (which the other books lack). The photographs too, are excellent. Chapters cover almost the whole of dermatology.
Although the book does need to be supplemented by further reading - it effectively serves the purpose of a second year resident.It fills the gap that other more in-depth textbooks on dermatology lack - the insight for beginners who are new to the subject.
I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to develop sound skills in the field of dermatology.
I thank the authors for their effort and hope they continue further editions of this book and build on scientific matter while retaining the original text, tables and format.

Maureen Pratt is not an MD. She is a journalist, author, and frequent speaker on thyroid disease and autoimmune disorders, as well as chronic pain and spirituality. So, what makes her an expert on thyroid disease? She has hypothyroidism, herself, along with lupus. She has lived, up close and personal, with two life-altering diseases. With this book, 'The First Year---Hypothyroidism,' she will wrap her arms around the newly diagnosed, cradle and reassure them, while arming the reader with practical information for coping with this serious condition, one that can wreak havoc on every single cell in the body.

While there is ample information regarding latest trends in treatment, medication alternatives and research, it is the sharing of her personal experiences that makes this a first read choice for the newly diagnosed; those trying to cope with the shock of the diagnosis and its implications. I know that when I read some of the negative symptoms she suffered through, I no longer felt alone with this disease. I felt a kinship with Pratt, that had me sharing a few tears, at times. And, this is one of the most dog-eared books I now own, because when I'm feeling blue, I turn to pages where she described feeling likewise. For example, when you share that your hair is falling out to your physician, they acknowledge superficially, that this is a symptom of hypothyroidism, and move on. Only one woman, relating to another, both with globs of hair in hand, can relate to how heart-wrenching this can feel, how de-feminizing. My Dr. is wonderful, but she's a victim of the system, too, with set limits for time she can spend with each patient. There's not much time to assess, and be nurturing, in 10 minutes; a system problem we must all deal with.

I can fully understand why Pratt is a valued speaker. When faced with any illness, or situational problem, we want to speak with, or hear from someone who has walked in the same shoes. In this case, she was more validating than my Dr. who, while supportive, has never experienced hypothyroidism except through a textbook. Believe me, I now know the difference, as I'm a RN, and when this disease struck home, it opened a new world beyond what I had previously understood about thyroid disease. It will bring on an entirely new dimension, and understanding, to my patient education practices.

I have moved on to more comprehensive, medical tomes, to enhance my knowledge base, but Pratt's book will always remain my nurturing introduction---my 'warm-fuzzy' book to turn to, as I would turn to a good friend. I thank her for sharing her experiences, the bitter and the sweet, with others. If I needed this type of support, as a health care practitioner, I believe that lay people will find it a Godsend. Thankfully, it is presented in a thorough, but simplistic manner that can be readily comprehended, by all.

Helped me so much! (2007-12-11)
My first year of diagnosis was a hard one. Hypothyroidism isn't something that you are cured of overnight. It takes months and months of hormone therapy before you begin to feel normal again and even more before the energy is there to support the feeling. :) This book helped me to see where I was in the process and let me know when I was expecting too much. If you've been diagnosed hypothyroid, you should really buy this book. It will take 12-18 months to get back to normal, wouldn't it be nice to have a friend to help you along? :)

This man knows what he is talking about. I suffered with cystic acne and other miserable things from the age of 15 until February 2009 (age 31) when I became a patient of the author. The acne is gone, my hair is under control and I look better than ever, which makes me feel better than ever.

If you struggle with hormonal issues, find that your doctor can't help...get this book. You don't have to see Dr. Redmond to be able to take advantage of the knowledge in the book. You just need a good doctor willing to work with you and follow the recommendations within. That may be hard to find...I went to the source for my issues.

I am so happy that I purchased this book! I recommend it to all women that want to know what is going on with their bodies as they age and approach changes. Living with discomfort because you are aging does NOT have to be. This book helps you identify problems and ways to solve them with your own physician. It actually helps you improve your quality of life because the information gives you a plan. It gives medical evidence as well as real life examples of women Dr. Redmond has treated. I am 37 and am loosing my hair, The information in this book has made me aware of all the reasons women can loose their hair. Many of the reason have the same symptoms. Which at first is frustrating until you realize more reasons means more possibilities to get it back even if only part of the hair. If you are considering hair transplants read this first, please.

If you are a woman suffering with unexplained hair loss on your head, hair growth where you don't want it, irritability, constant fatigue, dry skin or other skin problems and you are starting to feel generally more like a man than the beautiful woman you used to be, this book is for you. There ARE medications that can help you although most doctors will ignore and dismiss you. I went to see Dr. Redmond and he was able to help me, it was worth the trip into NYC and every penny. This book is so good, ... that someone stole it from me within the first week of me receiving it. As the other reviewers mentioned, this is an excellent derm book. The pictures are clear, concise, all the information you would need to make a diagnosis; including usual pattern of distribution, description, up-to-date treatment guidelines. Very concise! Well, need-less-to-say, I hope that who ever stole my book ends up using it to treat the 100's of skin diseases that I wish upon them and theirs! I hate thieves! So, I guess I'll just have to fork over the bucks to get another one, it's that good!!!

Handy little book (2008-10-08)
I was looking for a little guide to help me identify skin conditions quickly, at the bedside. Derm Notes is a nifty little book, that has alphabetized tabs and skin conditions for quick reference. My only complaint about this guide, and one that won't apply to most potential purchasers, is that as a pediatric provider, there are a few key conditions specific to peds missing from this book. I would love to see a peds derm notes, but since there is none, this book is the next best thing. Highly recommended.

Great for rotations! (2008-03-27)
I am a PA student and bought this book for my surgical/clinical derm rotation. This book is an excellent review of the most commonly encountered problems. There is a section which specifically covers lasers and what they are used for and at what strengths, which was very helpful. I kept this in my pocket for the whole rotation and was constantly looking at it in my free time. I eventually showed my preceptor and she was so impressed with it she eventually bought one too! A definite necessity for the clinical setting!!!

Pretty good, but (2007-06-10)
This is a small pocket guide with excellent text information. The only reservation I have is about the pictures. The quality of the images is a little low.

Very helpful, easy to use!! (2007-03-02)
Derm notes is a concise reference that quickly defines each condition, gives etiology and prevalence within patient populations, and presents treatment options. It also contains images that are excellent for recognizing conditions as they present in the clinic.

I am currently on my Pediatrics rotation and have referred to Derm Notes frequently to confirm diagnoses and consult treament plans. It can't replace a large derm atlas, but that isn't its function. This book does what it's designed to do, provide a fast and accurate clinical reference for students and providers.

This book can take a lot of abuse. The plastic pages are tear-proof and can be written on and wiped off. Mine has seen heavy use without a mark or rip to show for it. This book is money well-spent.

A Great Resource (2006-08-11)
This is a great pocketbook for anyone who is learning dermatology. Not only is it full of helpful visuals, but it is concise, small, and very user-friendly.
